People with Parkinson’s have been left behind. There are more than 100,000 Canadians living with Parkinson’s, and 1 in 5 people wait more than 1 year for a diagnosis by a neurologist. It doesn't have to be that way. Recognizing the need for ongoing assessment and assistance for patients and cargivers, Nurse On Board has created a clinic and a community program dedicated to the care of PD patients.
Ottawa's Only Private Nursing Clinic Dedicated to Serving PD Patients
Nurse On Board has opened its doors to people with Parkinsons living in the Ottawa area. We've created a place where they can get regular, specialized nursing support - the same kind of community-based care available in other countries.
As research uncovers new treatments and approaches to assisting people with PD, our highly experienced nurses make it their mission to ensure every client doesn't miss out on innovative approaches to treatment.
Our PD Clinic is truly the first of its kind in Canada. It's there so that people with PD always have access to a Registered Nurse who can address key concerns, provide timely education on self-management techniques, and provide sage advice relating to future needs, and all possible scenarios, in a proactive manner.
Our RNs use fully researched nursing care plans and protocols to address the complex challenges that PD clients face. Additionally, for those with PD who don’t live in Ottawa or the surrounding area, we'll even consider the option of virtual clinic visits.

What are the priorities for this program? Research has identified these top unmet needs of those with PD:
- More self-management;
- Better interdisciplinary collaboration between healthcare professionals;
- More time to discuss the future, and possible scenarios;
- A health care professional acting as a single point of access.
We Are Here to Support Caregivers too
Typically, the support of people with PD mainly falls upon the caregiver. Unfortunately research show that caregiver stress doubles when they are caring those who are experiencing cognitive impairment or behavioural issues, which affects many people with PD. Problems that go unaddressed contribute to falls, and lead to isolation, poor motivation, and ultimately a decrease in quality of life, all of which increase caregiver burden.
This innovative and comprehensive program offers a holistic approach, ensuring that people with PD and their caregivers remain at the centre of decision-making. As their needs are identified, researched-based interventions are planned, implemented, and evaluated. This program addresses complex health issues, offering detailed and customized strategies of care that address stated needs and the progressive nature of PD.
In short, the oversight of a highly experienced RN Care Manager facilitates timely problem-solving, collaboration with health professionals, while offering solutions to critical gaps in community care.
